South East Queensland

South East Queensland (SEQ) is a large area in the state of Australia. It includes three major cities: Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, the sunny Gold Coast, famous for its beaches, and the beautiful Sunshine Coast.
This area was the first part of Queensland where Europeans settled. People started living in places like Brisbane and Ipswich and then spread out. Over time, many jobs appeared, such as growing crops and cutting timber.
Today, South East Queensland has a strong economy with many different jobs, from farming to making things and welcoming tourists. The region uses a shared public transport system called Translink.
Definitions
South East Queensland is a name for a big area with many towns and cities. It does not have its own special government group, but the people there vote in elections.
South Eastern Queensland is a natural area that covers lots of land. This includes places like the Moreton Basin, South Burnett, and the Scenic Rim. It stretches north to Gladstone and down into north-eastern New South Wales.
History

South East Queensland was home to many Aboriginal people before British settlers arrived. The area was home to groups such as the Yugarapul around Brisbane, the Yugambeh people near the Gold Coast, the Quandamooka near Moreton Bay, and the Gubbi Gubbi further north.
European settlers came in the late 1830s, and logging was an important early job. The first railway in Queensland opened in 1865, connecting Grandchester to Ipswich. The area has faced natural challenges, like big floods and serious droughts.
Geography
South East Queensland has many tall mountains, including Queensland’s fifth highest peak, Mount Superbus. Important roads like the Cunningham Highway, Bruce Highway, Warrego Highway, and the Pacific Motorway connect this area to nearby regions.
The land here is hilly and includes ranges such as the McPherson Range, Teviot Range, and D'Aguilar Range. There are also beautiful islands along the coast, like Bribie Island and Moreton Island. Many dams have been built to store water, especially during dry times. Most of the land is used for grazing animals, but this area can sometimes have big floods. The sandy beaches and coastal hills here are some of the oldest and largest in the world.
South East Queensland includes 11 local government areas and part of the Toowoomba Region. The main cities are Brisbane, the state capital; Gold Coast, a popular tourist spot; and Sunshine Coast, another favorite for visitors. Toowoomba is the biggest inland city after Canberra. New communities are being built in places like Springfield and Yarrabilba to accommodate growing numbers of people.
The region has several airports. Brisbane Airport is the main international airport, connecting to many places around the world. Gold Coast Airport and Sunshine Coast Airport also offer many flights. Smaller airports like Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport and Archerfield Airport serve local and nearby areas.

Industry

South East Queensland grows many crops like broccoli, onions, Chinese cabbage, sweet corn, and celery. The Lockyer Valley is famous for its vegetables. In the past, timber cutting, mining, and dairy farming were important. Today, tourism is very important, especially because of places like the Gold Coast and Brisbane’s role as a transport hub. The area also has strong professional services and manufacturing.
People in South East Queensland often use cars to get to work, especially because many jobs in health and education are far from where most people live. Road transport in Brisbane mainly depends on cars.
Demographics
South East Queensland is a busy part of Australia with lots of people living there. In 2014, about 3.4 million people lived in this area. Most people live in three big cities: Brisbane, Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast.
The area is growing fast, with many new people moving in each week. By 2031, it is expected to have around 4.4 million people. This fast growth is making it busy for schools and hospitals, as more people need these services. Plans are being made to build more homes and services to help everyone.
Environment
The area of South East Queensland has many beautiful natural places. To the west of the big cities, you can find rural landscapes. The Lockyer Valley is an important farming area, often called "South East Queensland's Salad Bowl." There are also special rainforests along the southern border, such as Lamington National Park and Main Range National Park, which are listed as World Heritage sites.
The koala lives in this region but faces many challenges. They are threatened by losing their homes, diseases, and accidents with cars and animals. The government started plans to help protect koalas by planting trees and building special fences.
South East Queensland is also affected by climate change. After many years of dry weather and water limits, the government ended these restrictions in January 2013. There is also a problem with fire ants, and new areas around Brisbane and the Scenic Rim were added to a special program to stop them.
Attractions
South East Queensland has many fun places to visit. It is home to some of the biggest theme parks in Australia, such as Dreamworld in Coomera and Sea World at Main Beach. You can also visit wildlife parks like Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
The area also has tall buildings, like Q1 at Surfers Paradise. There are places for entertainment such as the Ekka and Riverfire.
