Susanna Fontanarossa

Susanna Fontanarossa (1435–1489) was an important woman in history because she was the mother of Christopher Columbus, a famous navigator and explorer. Columbus made big journeys across the oceans and helped people learn more about the world.

She was born in Liguria, a region in Italy, and lived during a time when explorers were starting to travel farther than ever before. Though not much is written about her own life, her son's adventures made her a part of history.

Because of her son, Susanna Fontanarossa is remembered for her role in one of the most important stories of exploration. Her family helped change how people saw the world long ago.

Biography

Susanna was born in the village of Monticellu on the island of Corsica. Her family was wealthy and Catholic. She was the daughter of Giacomo "Giacometti" Fontanarossa. Her family owned land in Quezzi, near Bisagno in Genoa.

She married Domenico Colombo in 1445 and had five children: Cristoforo, Bartolomeo, Giovanni, Giacomo, and a daughter named Bianchinetta.

A document in the State Archives of Genoa lists Susanna as the wife of Domenico Columbus and the mother of Cristoforo and Pellegrino. Today, in the village of Fontanarossa in Liguria, there is a stone that says Susanna Fontanarossa, the mother of Christopher Columbus, was born there.
