Tacuarembó is the largest department in Uruguay. It is in the northern part of the country. The capital city is also called Tacuarembó.

To the north and east, it borders the Rivera Department. To the west, it is next to Salto, Paysandú, and Río Negro departments. The Río Negro river runs along its southern edge, separating it from Durazno and Cerro Largo departments. This area helps us understand Uruguay's geography.

History

In 1816, Uruguay was divided into six parts, with two more added that same year. The area called Paysandú included many northern lands, where Tacuarembó is today. In 1837, Uruguay was divided again, and Tacuarembó was created, including what is now Rivera. Rivera became its own part in 1884.
