Temple of Minerva Chalcidica

The Temple of Minerva Chalcidica or Minervium was a small temple in the Campus Martius in ancient Rome. It was dedicated to the goddess Minerva. The famous leader Pompey the Great built it around 60 BC. The temple was near where another important temple, the Temple of Isis and Serapis, was built later.

Sadly, the temple was probably destroyed in a big fire in 80 AD. The fire affected the whole Campus Martius area. Many years later, the Roman emperor Domitian planned to rebuild it.

Even though the temple is gone, its name is still remembered today. In the 8th century, a beautiful basilica called Santa Maria sopra Minerva was built on the same spot. It keeps the memory of Minerva's temple alive.
