The Difference Engine
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
The Difference Engine (1990) is an alternative history novel by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. It is often called one of the first books in the steampunk genre.
The story imagines a world where Charles Babbage’s mechanical computers changed history very early on. In this different version of Britain during the Victorian-era, many famous people live very different lives. For example, Lord Byron survives and leads the country, while Benjamin Disraeli writes for newspapers instead of being Prime Minister. The United States is not one country but many smaller ones.
Even though things seem better and more advanced, the book also includes a story about people trying to solve crimes. After it came out, the novel was nominated for several big awards. People still study the book to learn about how it looks at history and famous people, and how it connects to another book called Sybil.
