A detailed map showing the natural landscape and geography of Russia's Northwestern Federal District.

The Timanide Orogen is a very old mountain-building area. It formed in northeastern Baltica a long time ago during the Neoproterozoic.

It stretches about 3000 km. It reaches from the southern Urals down to the Polar Urals and across the Kanin Peninsula and Varanger Peninsula. The Timan Ridge is a key place to study this ancient mountain system.

This area was created when tectonic plates moved and crashed together. It was linked to a deep underwater trench called a subduction zone. Later, Baltica and Arctida came together between 528 and 510 million years ago.

Over time, wind and water wore down these mountains. Their broken pieces became part of the ground in places like the East European Platform and near Lake Ladoga.

Early scientists who studied this place include Wilhelm Ramsay, Feodosy Tschernyschev, and Hans Reusch. They wrote about it in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
