Toni Sailer

Anton Engelbert "Toni" Sailer (17 November 1935 – 24 August 2009) was an Austrian alpine ski racer. He is known as one of the greatest skiers ever. When he was just 20 years old, Toni did something amazing. He won three gold medals at the alpine skiing at the 1956 Winter Olympics. His skill and speed made him a hero in sports. Two years later, at the 1958 World Championships, he almost did it again. He won two gold medals and one silver. Toni’s wins helped make the 1956 Olympics a special event for winter sports fans everywhere.

Career

Toni Sailer was born and grew up in Kitzbühel in Tyrol. He was called "Blitz from Kitz," where "Blitz" is a German word meaning "flash of lightning." As a teenager, he won important races at age 16. But he broke his leg and missed a whole season, which affected his performance in the 1953 World Championships.

He came back strong in 1955. In 1956, at age 20, he won all three gold medals in alpine skiing at the Winter Olympics. This made him the most successful athlete at those Olympics. In 1958, he almost did it again at the World Championships, winning three gold medals and one silver. He stopped competing in 1959 due to some issues about his status as an amateur athlete.

After racing

After his racing career, Toni Sailer did many different things. He helped make the first skis from fiberglass in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He also acted in several fun movies in the late 1950s and early 1970s, often showing off his skiing skills.

Later, Sailer became the chief trainer and technical director for the Austrian Skiing Association from 1972 to 1976. He also ran a summer ski camp in Whistler, Canada, during the 1960s and 1970s. Even in 2003, he made some TV appearances. He tried to run for Mayor of Kitzbühel in 2004 but decided not to continue because it would have taken too much time. In 2006, he retired from his job as chief of race for the Hahnenkamm Race.

Honors

Toni Sailer was chosen as Austria's top athlete in 1956, 1957, and 1958. In 1999, he was named Austria's top athlete of the century. He appeared on the cover of Bravo magazine in 1958. In 1982, the International Olympic Committee gave him the Bronze Olympic Order for helping the Olympic Movement.

Personal life

Toni Sailer married Gaby Rummeny in 1976 in Vancouver. She sadly passed away from cancer in 2000. Later, he married Hedwig Fischer in 2006, and they stayed married until he passed away. He had a son named Florian from his first marriage, and Florian is still alive today.

Death

Toni Sailer was diagnosed with a serious illness in 2008 and received treatment. Sadly, he passed away from this illness in Innsbruck, Austria, in 2009 at the age of 73. He was buried in Kitzbühel.

He appeared in Sansone e il tesoro degli Incas in 1964, the TV film The Sky Is Blue in 1964, and Ski Fever in 1966. Later, he was in The Great Happiness in 1967, Aunt Trude from Buxtehude in 1971, and Holidays in Tyrol in 1971. His last known role was in the TV series Almenrausch und Pulverschnee in 1993.
