The old-looking archway that leads to Theatre Drive was designed by the architect Alexander Kaminsky in 1871. This special project was paid for by Kaminsky's brother-in-law, Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov. Pavel Tretyakov also started the Tretyakov Gallery, a very important art place.

The Tretyakovs were unhappy because of a problem on Nikolskaya Street. So, they bought some land and brought back an old path from the Middle Ages that went from Nikolskaya Street to Theatre Drive.
