As of 2023, workers were getting ready to start building it in early 2024, aiming to complete it by September 2027. But as of 2025, construction has still not started.

History

The Tribune Tower is on a property with several buildings and a parking lot. In 2016, the property was sold, and plans started for a new tall building called the Tribune East Tower. The tower was first planned to be very tall, but the design was changed to be shorter than the Willis Tower, Chicago's tallest building.

The plans for the Tribune East Tower were approved by city officials in 2020. When built, it will be the second-tallest building in Chicago. The tower will have hotel rooms, apartments, and condos. Construction will start in 2024 and finish in 2027. The building will also have parking spaces and some affordable housing units.
