The United Synagogue is the largest group that supports Orthodox Jewish communities in Britain. It works like a big charity, helping many people across different synagogues. This makes it the biggest synagogue group in all of Europe!

The United Synagogue does many important things for the Jewish community in Britain. It helps with kosher food rules, runs nurseries and marriage services, and has a special team that supports people who need help. It also works closely with the Chief Rabbi, who is an important leader for Jewish people in many countries.

One of the key leaders of the United Synagogue is Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis KBE. He holds a special title given by the British government, showing his important role. The United Synagogue also supports many programs for young people, like summer camps and special events, helping keep traditions alive for future generations.

History

The United Synagogue was created by an Act of Parliament in 1870. It joined together five London communities: Great Synagogue, Hambro' Synagogue, New Synagogue, Central Synagogue, and Bayswater Synagogue.

Nathan Marcus Adler, Chief Rabbi and founder of the United Synagogue

Led by Nathan Marcus Adler, the Chief Rabbi of the British Empire, and with leaders like Nathan Rothschild, 1st Baron Rothschild, the United Synagogue became important to British Jewish life. Over time, it has changed to meet the needs of its members. In the 1880s, many new Jewish families came from Eastern Europe. They preferred smaller synagogues. The United Synagogue helped these families and built a synagogue in East London for them.

Today, the United Synagogue supports 56 synagogues and is one of the largest groups for Jewish communities in Britain. It also cares for many old cemeteries to keep them safe.

In 1970 and again in 2020, the United Synagogue celebrated special anniversaries. In 2020, it created an online platform called TheUS.tv during the COVID-19 pandemic to help people stay connected.

The United Synagogue has built new community centers and synagogues in areas where more people live. It has also closed some older buildings in areas where fewer people live. Some of these older buildings are now used for other purposes, but the United Synagogue still supports its members and their traditions.

Activities

The United Synagogue helps Jewish communities across Britain with many important services and programs. It supports kosher food rules, special areas for resting during Shabbat, schools, weddings, and helps people in need. It also offers learning resources, summer camps for kids, and supports Jewish schools in London.

The charity uses donations, membership fees, and its own activities to fund these programs. More than 2,000 volunteers help run synagogues, plan events for adults and children, and support families and people who need help. Volunteers also help prepare for burials, showing care and respect for the community.

Jewish community

The United Synagogue is one of 29 members of the Jewish Leadership Council, a British umbrella organisation. It also elects deputies to the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
