Upper Palatinate

The Upper Palatinate (/pəˈlætɪnɪt/; German: Oberpfalz, pronounced ^ⓘ, Bavarian: Obapfoiz, Owerpfolz) is an administrative region in the eastern part of Bavaria, Germany. It is one of the traditional areas that make up the beautiful country of Germany. This region has a rich history and many interesting places to visit.

The Upper Palatinate includes seven districts and 226 towns and cities. Three major cities are important centers for the people who live there. These cities have grown over many years and now help with business, culture, and community life.

Geography

The Upper Palatinate is a pretty area in eastern Bavaria, Germany. It has low mountains, many ponds, and lakes, making it a calm place to visit. Unlike other parts of Germany, it is mostly countryside with fewer people living there.

It shares borders with several areas, including Upper Franconia to the north, the Czech Republic to the east, and Upper Bavaria to the south. Some special places in the Upper Palatinate are the Upper Palatine Forest with its deep valleys and old castles, the Upper Palatine Lake District with the Steinberger See, and the Bavarian Forest, which is a large protected area. The highest point in this region is near the Großer Arber, standing tall above the land.

History

The Upper Palatinate started as part of the Bavarian March of the Nordgau during the High Middle Ages. It got its name in the early 14th century. For many years, the Wittelsbach family ruled much of the area. In 1329, a treaty divided their lands into two parts: the Lower Palatinate near the Rhine River and the Upper Palatinate around Amberg. Over time, rulers changed. After some hard times for the ruler in 1619–1620, the Upper Palatinate came under Bavarian control and has stayed that way since then.

When the Kingdom of Bavaria was created, the land was reorganized into districts. In 1808, one of these districts was called Regenkreis. Later, in 1837, King Ludwig I renamed it the Upper Palatinate after old names of the area.

The Upper Palatinate has many interesting places to visit. You can see old palaces like the one in Regensburg. Nearby is the famous Walhalla memorial. Other nice cities to visit are Amberg, Weiden, and Neumarkt.

Beautiful natural spots include the Danube river and the Upper Palatine Forest. Don’t miss Waldsassen Abbey and the nearby Kappl Trinity church, as well as the pilgrim church of Maria Hilf in Freystadt.
