Vase
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
A vase is an open container. It can be made from many materials, such as glass, metals like aluminium, brass, bronze, or stainless steel, or even wood. Vases are often decorated. People commonly use them to hold cut flowers. Vases come in many sizes for different flowers or objects.
Vases usually have a similar shape. They often have a base, a main body, and a top part that flares out. Some vases also have handles to make them easier to hold.
People all around the world have made different kinds of vases for a long time. For example, Chinese ceramics and Native American pottery each have special styles. In ancient Greece, painted pottery was sometimes called vases, even if they looked more like cups or jugs. In 2003, artist Grayson Perry won a big award called the Turner Prize for his ceramic vases.
History
Vases have been important in many cultures for a long time. Often, the only art we have left from old cultures comes from ceramic vases. In the early days of making pottery, people used a method called coiling. They shaped clay into long, thin strips and made them into smooth walls to create vases.
Potter's wheel
The potter's wheel was invented in Mesopotamia around the 4th millennium BCE. It later spread across much of Eurasia and Africa but was not known in the New World until Europeans arrived. The earliest evidence of the potter's wheel was found in southern Iraq. This new way of making pottery was better than the old methods people used before. Over time, it was also used to decorate pottery in beautiful ways.
Garden vase
Garden vases are often shaped like a V, but they can also be round like a cylinder or shaped like a bowl. These vases are usually made from ceramic, but today many are made from plastic. Famous examples include the Torlonia Vase and the Medici Vase found in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
Shapes
Vases come in many different shapes and styles. In ancient Greece, popular shapes included the Amphora, Hydria, Krater, Lekythos, Oinochoe, and Olpe. In China, one famous shape is the Meiping. Today, vases can be bottle-shaped, cylinder-shaped, flower brick-shaped, gourd-shaped, jar-shaped, pitcher-shaped, rotund, turnip-shaped, urn-shaped, V-shaped, or U-shaped.
Material types
Vases can be made from many different materials. Common choices include ceramic, crystal, glass, metal, plastic, porcelain, and wood. Each material gives the vase its own special look and feel.
