Wine festivals are special events that celebrate wine and the making of it. They usually happen after grapes are harvested, which in many places is in late September and through October. These festivals are found in many wine regions around the world and are similar to other harvest celebrations.

The Wine Festival (1865, Albert Anker, Switzerland)

The ancient Egyptians honored the god Osiris with wine, but the earliest known wine festivals came from Greek celebrations for their wine god Dionysos. At these festivals, people enjoy drinking wine, watching grapes being pressed, eating local foods, and listening to music.
