Yearbook
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
A yearbook, also known as an annual, is a type of book published annually. Schools use it to remember and celebrate what happened during the past year. Yearbooks usually have photographs, memories, and special moments from students, teachers, and staff.
Many high schools, colleges, elementary and middle schools make yearbooks. Some schools now make thinner yearbooks or stop making them. This is because many people share photos and memories online through social media instead of in a printed book.
Yearbooks often have a special theme that connects all the pages. Even though fewer schools make them today, yearbooks are still a special keepsake for many people who want to remember their school days.
History
Long ago, people used special slabs to remember students, like in Ancient Athens during the Roman Empire. Later, schools in New England made simple scrapbooks to keep memories. The first modern yearbook was made in 1806 at Yale College and showed students' outlines because real photographs were not available yet.
Yearbooks by country
Australia
In Australia, school yearbooks are like those in North America. They are yearly magazines for the school, showing events from the school year. Teachers usually help as editors. The yearbooks are printed on A4 paper and are softcover, but some schools make hardcover ones. Some schools even have a special yearbook for younger students.
Australian schools use technology to make their yearbooks, with color and black-and-white pages depending on their budget.
India
India does not have a long history of school yearbooks. But some top schools make special yearbooks created by students in their final year. These yearbooks have messages from school leaders, photos of events, and pictures from festivals. Top schools also make magazines for all students. Now, some students are making custom yearbooks like those in the US or Europe, using new technology.
Nigeria
In Nigeria, yearbooks are common in schools, like in the US and Canada. Schools often publish them at the end of the school year. These yearbooks are similar to those in the US, with themed sections, big events, many photos, and drawings of school life.
South Africa
Yearbooks are less common in South African schools than in the US and Canada, but some schools publish them at the end of the year. These yearbooks are much like those in the US, with themed sections, big events, many photos, and drawings of school life. Major events include end-of-year dances, big sports competitions, and special grade events.
United States
In elementary and middle schools in the US, a staff member may make the yearbook, sometimes with student help. These books are smaller and usually paperbound. High school yearbooks cover many topics like school life, sports, clubs, and big events. Each student usually has a photo, and seniors often get a larger photo. The yearbook staff is made up of students with teachers to guide them.
High school yearbooks are seen as a form of journalism. Colleges also make yearbooks in a similar way, sometimes including recaps of football and basketball games. Some colleges have stopped making yearbooks because of high costs, but others continue with small amounts of student fees. The Glomerata is one of the most popular college yearbooks, with thousands of copies given to students.
U.S. military
Warships in the United States Navy often make yearbook-style books after long trips. These books, called "cruise books," are made by the ship's staff and printed by the same companies that make high school and college yearbooks. The cruise book for a large aircraft carrier can be over 600 pages long, with photos of all the sailors and Marines on board.
The Navy’s Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois, also makes yearbook-style books for each group of new sailors. These smaller books are called "The Keel" and include color photos common to all books that year, plus black-and-white photos for each group of recruits.
Production and distribution
Yearbooks are usually made by student clubs or classes, often with help from a teacher. The students in charge gather all the information for the book and decide how to arrange it. Most yearbooks follow a similar format, with photos and details about students, activities, sports, and other school events.
In the U.S., yearbooks often include photos of all students, sometimes with short descriptions of their achievements or future plans. Special pages might be made for graduating students. There is usually a day when students get their photos taken for the yearbook. In other countries, yearbooks might focus only on the graduating class.
Yearbooks also show school life, including trips, sports, and clubs. Pages might show students’ activities both at school and outside. Some yearbooks include written stories or articles about school life and events. There are often sections for academics, clubs, and sports, with photos and descriptions of what students did during the year. Many yearbooks also have pages for advertisements from local businesses, and some include an index to help find people’s pages. Near the end, there is usually a page where students can leave messages for each other. Today, most yearbooks are designed using computers, making the process easier and faster. Yearbooks are usually printed by companies that work with schools, and they are often distributed at the end of the school year so students can sign each other’s books. Digital yearbooks, which can include text, photos, audio, and video, have also become popular.
