The 1905 World Series was the championship series for the Major League Baseball 1905 season. It featured the National League champion New York Giants against the American League champion Philadelphia Athletics. The Giants won the series 4 games to 1, in a best-4-of-7 format. This was the second World Series ever held, and the first to be officially approved by the leagues and the National Baseball Commission.

Four of the five games had famous pitchers who later became members of the Hall of Fame. Games 1 and 3 were played in Philadelphia, while games 2, 4, and 5 took place in New York City. Each game ended with no runs scored by either team, called a shutout. Three of these shutouts were won by the great pitcher Christy Mathewson over just six days. This series was also the first time a team from New York City won a professional sports championship.

Summary

Before the 1905 World Series began, the Philadelphia Athletics faced a big challenge. Their best pitcher, Rube Waddell, could not play because of a shoulder injury. Some people later wondered if he was asked not to play, but the team's manager, Connie Mack, did not believe this.

The New York Giants' manager, John McGraw, had called the Athletics a "white elephant" before the series. In response, the Athletics' team captain, Lave Cross, gave McGraw a toy white elephant before the first game, which made everyone laugh. The Giants went on to win the series easily, defeating the Athletics four games to one.

Firsts and records

This was the first World Series played in a best-of-seven format, instead of the earlier best-of-nine style. The Philadelphia Athletics made history by losing a game 1–0 without earning any runs. All five games were shutouts, with only one relief pitcher used the whole series.

The New York Giants did not allow any earned runs, setting a record for the lowest team ERA of 0.00 that stood until the Atlanta Braves matched it in the 2020 National League Wild Card Series. The first steal of home in World Series history happened in Game 3 by New York's Bill Dahlen. Both managers and four of the five starting pitchers are now in the Hall of Fame.
