Fans waiting to get bleacher seats for the 1923 World Series at Yankee Stadium.

The 1923 World Series was the championship series in Major League Baseball for the 1923 season. It was the 20th time the World Series was held, and it brought together the best teams from the American League and the National League. The New York Yankees faced off against the New York Giants.

The Yankees won the series in six games, marking the beginning of their long history of success. By 2026, they would go on to win 27 World Series championships, making them one of the most successful teams in baseball history.

This particular World Series was special because it was played in different stadiums. The teams switched ballparks for each game. This happened because the first Yankee Stadium had just opened its doors that season, and the Polo Grounds was no longer enough to hold both teams.

Background

The New York Yankees played against the New York Giants in the 1923 World Series. This was the Yankees' new stadium opening year, and Babe Ruth hit a home run when the stadium opened. Ruth also hit three home runs during the series. In one game, the Giants' player "Old Casey" Stengel hit a home run to win the game, even though his shoe came off while he was running the bases.

In the final game, the Yankees came back from behind to win the series. This was the third time a team won the World Series in their new stadium. Babe Ruth played very well, with a good batting average and three home runs. Some famous players like Lou Gehrig did not get to play because of rules at the time.
