2003 World Series
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The 2003 World Series, also called the Centennial World Series, was the championship series of Major League Baseball's 2003 season. It was the 99th World Series and featured a best-of-seven playoff between the National League champion Florida Marlins and the American League champion New York Yankees. The Marlins surprised many people by winning against the favored Yankees, with the final score being four games to two.
The games took place from October 18 to October 25, 2003. This was special because it was the most recent World Series where the team that lost actually scored more runs than the team that won. The New York Yankees scored 21 runs, while the Florida Marlins scored 17, but the Marlins still won the series.
This victory was the second World Series championship for the Florida Marlins, who had also won in 1997. After this, the Marlins did not make it back to the postseason until 2020. The 2003 World Series is remembered as an exciting and surprising finish in baseball history.

The 2003 World Series was a big baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Florida Marlins. The Yankees had been in the World Series many times, but the Marlins were there for just the second time. The Marlins were not expected to win, but they surprised everyone by beating the Yankees.
This World Series was special because it was the 100th one ever, even though it was actually the 99th because some early games were not played. The Marlins had a smaller team and less money, but they played very well together and won the championship.
Broadcasting
Fox showed the 2003 World Series on TV in the United States. Joe Buck and Tim McCarver were the announcers for Fox. For people listening on the radio, ESPN Radio covered the games, with Jon Miller and Joe Morgan describing the action.
The Florida Marlins had their local games broadcast on WQAM in Miami and on the Marlins Radio Network. Jon Sciambi and Dave Van Horne were the announcers. For the New York Yankees, their local broadcasts were on WCBS-AM and the New York Yankees Radio Network, with John Sterling and Charley Steiner announcing.
Summary
The New York Yankees had the advantage of playing the first game at home because they won the 2003 All-Star game. Before this, Major League Baseball switched the home-field advantage between the leagues each year.

Matchups
The 2003 World Series was a big baseball game between two teams: the Florida Marlins and the New York Yankees. The Marlins surprised everyone by winning the series, which had seven games in total.
In the first game, the Marlins' pitchers did a great job keeping the Yankees from scoring many runs. The Yankees did manage a few runs, but the Marlins won the game. The second game was different, as the Yankees played much better and won with strong pitching from one of their players.
The third game was very close for a while, but the Yankees scored some more runs in the later parts of the game to win. The fourth game started with the Marlins scoring early, but the Yankees tried to catch up. The game went into extra innings before the Marlins finally won.
In the fifth game, the Marlins scored early and held on to their lead, even though the Yankees tried to come back. The sixth and final game was very exciting, with the Marlins winning with a strong performance from one of their young pitchers. This victory meant the Marlins won the World Series, making them champions of baseball that year.

This World Series is special because it is one of the few times a team won even though they scored fewer runs than their opponent. This has happened in other World Series too, like in 1918, 1959, 1977, 1992, and 1996 for six-game series, and in 1957, 1960, 1962, 1964, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1991, 1997, and 2002 for seven-game series. It was also almost like this in 2016 and 2017.
Aftermath
The Marlins second post-World Series fire sale
After winning the World Series, the Florida Marlins made several changes to their team over the next few years. They traded away or lost some players due to free agency. After the 2005 season, they made even more changes, letting go of several players and trading others to get new talent. Despite these changes, the team almost made the playoffs in 2006 but ended up finishing below .500.
The team continued to make changes in later years, trading away more players. Even though they won two World Series titles and had a new ballpark, they struggled to build a strong group of fans partly because of these many changes. The Marlins didn’t return to the playoffs until 2020, after a shorter season, but they lost their first playoff series that year.
Exit Boone, Enter Rodriguez
In early 2004, Yankees player Aaron Boone hurt his knee in a basketball game and missed the whole season. The Yankees needed a new player and traded for Alex Rodriguez, who played many successful years with the team, winning awards and helping them win a World Series. Boone later became a manager for the Yankees in 2018.
Torre's last hurrah
The 2003 World Series was the last time Joe Torre managed the Yankees in the World Series. They didn’t return until 2009, after Torre left. Torre later managed another team and was honored for his success with the Yankees.
Other notes
Some players who were on the Marlins or Yankees later won World Series titles with other teams.
