The meridian 86° west of Greenwich is a line of longitude that stretches from the North Pole across many places, including the Arctic Ocean, North America, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, Central America, the Pacific Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and Antarctica, ending at the South Pole.

This special line of longitude helps us understand the Earth’s shape and location. It connects two very different points on our planet, creating a path that circles all the way around. The 86th meridian west also forms a great circle when paired with the 94th meridian east, meaning it helps us see how Earth’s geography works together.

From Pole to Pole

Starting at the North Pole and heading south to the South Pole, the 86th meridian west passes through many places.
