History
The Academia Colombiana de la Lengua is the oldest Spanish language academy in Latin America, founded in 1871. Important writers and language experts started it, including Jose Maria Vergara y Vergara, Manuel María Mallarino, Rufino José Cuervo, and Miguel Antonio Caro.
The academy’s first building was later torn down, and today it is in a neoclassical-style building designed by Spanish architect Alfredo Rodríguez Ordaz. Since 1960, the academy has helped the Colombian government with language questions. Many well-known people have been members of the academy over the years.
Library
The library of the Colombian Academy of Language was organized by an academic named Manuel José Forero. The books and materials in the library are grouped into collections based on who donated them or who originally owned them.
