The day is named after Ada Lovelace, a brilliant mathematician and one of the very first computer science pioneers. She lived a long time ago, but her clever ideas about how computers could work inspired many people even today.

Ada Lovelace Day began in 2009 as a day for people to write blog posts about women in these important fields. Over time, it has grown into a big event celebrated in many countries, with conferences and gatherings to share ideas and celebrate women's achievements in STEM.

The day was founded in the United Kingdom in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson on the second Tuesday in October to raise awareness about the contributions of women to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Since it began, Ada Lovelace Day has grown into an international event. Groups such as museums, universities, and professional societies organize activities. These events, held in October and November, include discussions, film screenings, and virtual Wikipedia Editathons to celebrate women's achievements in STEM.
