Flag of Mauritania, adopted in 2017. The National Assembly added red stripes to the top and bottom edges to represent “the blood shed by the martyrs of independence”.

Aleg is the capital of the Brakna Region in Mauritania. It is found near the coordinates 17°3′0″N 13°55′0″W / 17.05000°N 13.91667°W / 17.05000; -13.91667. The name of the city means “ascending path” in the Zenaga language. This location holds importance as an administrative center in the region.

Background

The town of Aleg includes the village of 'Elb Jmel. Nearby is the village of Lamden, where a former President of Mauritania, Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, was born.

The Road of Hope

The Road of Hope, also called the Transmauritanian, is the most important road in Mauritania. It runs almost straight for about 1,100 km from west to east. This road links the capital city, Nouakchott, to a town called Néma near the border with Mali.

The road passes through several towns, including Nouakchott, Boutilimit, Aleg, Kiffa, Ayoun el-Atrouss, Timbedra, and Néma.
