Alexandre Brongniart

Alexandre Brongniart (5 February 1770 – 7 October 1847) was a French chemist, mineralogist, geologist, paleontologist, and zoologist. He worked closely with Georges Cuvier to study the geology around Paris.

Brongniart looked at fossil remains and rock types to classify different layers of earth called Tertiary formations. His work helped make geology a proper science in the 1800s by gathering and organizing many observations.

He also started the Musée national de Céramique-Sèvres (National Museum of Ceramics). Brongniart was the director of the Sèvres Porcelain Factory from 1800 until he passed away in 1847.

Life

Alexandre Brongniart was born in Paris. He was the son of architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart and the father of botanist Adolphe-Théodore Brongniart.

In 1788, he helped start the French Philomathic Society of Paris. In 1797, he began teaching natural history at the Central School of the Four Nations and later became a professor of mineralogy at the Museum of Natural History in Paris in 1822.

In 1800, he was named director of the porcelain factory at Sèvres by Napoleon’s minister of the interior, Lucien Bonaparte. He led this factory for 47 years. Brongniart used his science knowledge, especially in chemistry and ceramics, along with his management skills, to improve the factory. He also studied reptiles, wrote about mineralogy and ceramic arts, and did important work on trilobites and ways to date layers of rock.

He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1819 and to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1823.

Work

Alexandre Brongniart studied reptiles and in 1800 published a book called Essai d'une classification naturelle des reptiles. He grouped reptiles into four types: Chelonia, Sauria, Ophidia and Batrachia. Later, a scientist named Pierre Latreille changed the group Batrachia to Amphibians because they are different from other reptiles.

Brongniart’s most important geological work was done with Georges Cuvier. In 1811, they studied the geology around Paris and identified nine different layers of earth formed over time. Brongniart looked at the fossils in these layers and found both sea and freshwater creatures. This helped show that these layers were not formed by a shrinking ocean. Their work was very important for studying the Earth using fossils.

Brongniart also published the first detailed study of trilobites in 1822, grouping them by age. While working at Sèvres, he created a special math formula to find out how much dry material is in ceramic mixes, now called Brongniart’s formula.

Publications

Alexandre Brongniart wrote many important books about science. Some of his well-known works include Essai d'une classification naturelle des reptiles from 1800, Traité Élémentaire de Minéralogie from 1807, and Essai sur la géographie minéralogique des environs de Paris from 1811. He also published studies about fossils and different types of rocks, helping people understand the Earth better.

His other publications include Histoire naturelle des crustacés fossiles from 1822 and Classification et caractères minéralogiques des roches homogènes et hétérogènes from 1827, showing his work in many areas of natural history.

Alexandre Brongniart was married to Cecile Coquebert de Montbret, the daughter of a French consul to England. They had three children. Their son, Adolphe-Théodore Brongniart, became an important scientist in the study of ancient plants. Their daughter Hermine married Jean Baptiste Dumas, and their other daughter Mathilde married Jean Victoir Audouin.
