American Power and the New Mandarins

American Power and the New Mandarins is a book by American academic Noam Chomsky. It was mostly written in 1968 and came out in 1969. This was Chomsky’s first book to focus on politics. In the book, he talks about why he was against the United States getting involved in the Vietnam War. He explains his thoughts clearly and in detail, showing why he believed it was a mistake for the U.S. to be part of that conflict. The book is important because it was one of the first times Chomsky shared his strong political views with the world. It helped many people understand more about the Vietnam War and the big decisions countries make.

Overview

Noam Chomsky argues that American leaders and experts had a big role in the problems during the Vietnam War. He believed that the United States was more focused on stopping local movements in South Vietnam than on protecting it from attacks by North Vietnam.

Chomsky warned that we should not always trust experts to make fair decisions just because they have special knowledge. He thought they might be too proud and unwilling to admit when they are wrong. He also said that powerful groups often create ideas that make their actions seem good, even when they are not.
