Americanization is the way the United States influences other countries through its culture and economy. This influence affects many parts of life in other nations, including their media, food, business, popular culture, technology, and politics. Some people think this influence is a sign of progress and new ideas.

The United States has been a big force in the world's movies since the 1910s. Many of the most popular films come from or are financed by American companies, even if they are set in other places. Big American companies like the Coca-Cola Company, McDonald's, Subway, Starbucks, Burger King, Pizza Hut, KFC, and Domino's Pizza have restaurants all over the world. Some of the biggest brands, like Apple Inc., Google, and Microsoft, are also based in the United States.

During the Cold War, Americanization was used to counter the influence of the Soviet Union. Schools and universities were key targets. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Americanization grew even more, especially with the rise of the Internet in the mid-2000s. Some people worry about how much American technology is used around the world.

Definitions

The word "Americanization" means different things to different people, but most agree it describes how ideas and ways of doing things from the United States spread to other countries. One writer said it is about sharing values, behaviors, and technologies from the United States to other places. Another writer described it as how American influences affect the way people in other countries think and act.

Media and popular culture

Hollywood, the American film and television industry, has been very important in the world's media since the 1910s. It is the main way people everywhere see American styles, traditions, places, and daily life. The big film studios in the United States make many of the most popular and highest-selling movies in the world. Almost all of the top 50 movies that made the most money were made in the United States.

After World War II, the U.S. government helped change the media in some countries to support democracy. For example, in Germany, they started a newspaper called Die Neue Zeitung in Munich in 1945. This newspaper showed Germans about American culture, sports, politics, and more.

American culture continued to spread even in places with strict rules. In 1990, the first McDonald's in Soviet Russia opened in Moscow and had thousands of people waiting to visit. By 1997, there were 21 McDonald's places in Russia.

American television programs are shown around the world, often through American companies like HBO Asia, CNBC Europe, and CNN International. In 2006, a survey found that many of the most-watched shows were American, like CSI: Miami, Lost, and The Simpsons.

American films have always been very popular worldwide. The top 50 movies that made the most money were all made in the United States. When countries make trade agreements, they sometimes talk about how many American movies can be shown. For example, Mexico changed its rules after making a trade agreement with the United States and Canada.

Many American musicians, like Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, are loved all over the world. Michael Jackson's album Thriller is the best-selling album ever.

By looking at words in books and online messages, we can see that American English is used more in the European Union than British English.

Many of the world's biggest companies come from the United States. Examples include Alphabet (Google), Amazon, AT&T, Apple, Coca-Cola, Disney, General Motors, McDonald's, Nike, Meta, Microsoft, Pepsi, and Walmart. These companies have spread American styles and products all around the world. Fast food places like McDonald's, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Domino's Pizza can be found in many countries.

The United States is also home to many leading computer companies, such as Microsoft, Apple, Intel, HP Inc., Dell, and IBM. Most of the world's computer software comes from these American companies. Long ago, some people thought that American ways meant progress and new ideas. In the 1920s, Germany looked to American methods to make work more efficient and productive. This idea changed how people lived and worked, not just in factories but in many parts of daily life.

Visibility

Koç University, one of the top universities in Turkey, is based on the American model. The university also has an American football team, the Koç Rams.

From 1950 to 1965, American money put into Europe grew a lot, up by 800% to $13.9 billion. This big increase made many people talk about something called Americanization. Even with this growth, American money was just half of all the money Europe used, and American companies employed only a small part of Europe’s workers. The main reason for these investments was to stay competitive, mostly because of American technology.

At first, only France had concerns about American money coming in, but later other countries joined in. For example, Finland became very influenced by American ways, so much that some people worried and tried to control American TV shows. Over time, though, Europe started putting even more money into the United States than the other way around, and people talked less about American ownership in Europe.

Recent trends

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, American culture and ideas have spread more widely around the world. Before the late 1980s, some countries, like Russia and China, often criticized the United States. In 2013, a leader from Russia wrote in a famous newspaper, saying it was risky to think one country is more important than others.

Today, many worry about how American technology, like the high-speed Internet and smartphone devices, has reached more people. Many new apps and devices come from places like Silicon Valley. In Europe, some people are concerned about big American companies such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, the iPhone, and Uber. They worry about privacy and fairness with these companies. Some leaders in Europe have deep concerns about how powerful these American technology companies have become.

Historiography

The United States had a big effect on the Navajo people at Canyon de Chelly in the late 1800s, led by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

In 1902, a British writer named William Stead wrote a book called The Americanization of the World. In it, he talked about how many people were starting to like ideas from America. Later studies looked at how the United States influenced Europe, especially during a time called the Cold War, and found that the sharing of culture and ideas between the two places was very complicated.

Criticism

Some people think that when different countries, like Sinicization and Americanization, compete, it might create a new powerful country or make one of them more important than the others. This can sometimes hurt local businesses.

Others believe that after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, the world became mostly controlled by one country, but this idea might not be completely true. Some say this view is too focused on the United States being special. Instead, the world has many powerful countries now. The real effect the United States has on the world is still being talked about and is very important for leaders making decisions today. Thinking the United States is all-powerful can be risky, as seen when the country tried to help in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, but faced many challenges.
