Andrew Donald Booth

Andrew Donald Booth (11 February 1918 – 29 November 2009) was a British electrical engineer, physicist, and computer scientist. He helped create early memory systems for computers called magnetic drum memory, which were important for storing information.
Booth also developed something called Booth's multiplication algorithm, a clever way to help computers do math faster. Later in his life, he moved to Canada and became the president of Lakehead University, where he helped guide and support students and teachers in their work. His ideas and inventions helped shape the early days of computing and continue to be important in the history of technology.
Early life
Andrew Donald Booth was born on February 11, 1918, in East Molesy, Surrey, UK. He grew up in Weybridge, Surrey, and went to school at Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School. In 1937, he earned a scholarship to study mathematics at Jesus College, Cambridge. However, he left Cambridge without finishing his degree because he lost interest in pure mathematics. Instead, he earned a first-class degree through the University of London.
Career
From 1943 to 1945, Andrew Donald Booth worked as a scientist studying X-rays at the British Rubber Producers' Research Association in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. He earned his PhD in crystallography from the University of Birmingham in 1944.
In 1945, Booth moved to Birkbeck College at the University of London. There, he helped build some of the first electronic computers in the United Kingdom, including the All Purpose Electronic Computer, which was first installed at the British Rayon Research Association. He also started Birkbeck's department of numerical automation and was made a fellow of the university in 2004. Later, he also worked on projects involving machine translation.
After World War II, Booth continued his research in crystallography at Birkbeck College and built a device for studying patterns in crystals. He learned about early computer ideas from scientists Alan Turing and John von Neumann.
In 1972, Booth became the President of Lakehead University in Canada, a role he held until 1978.
Personal life
Andrew Donald Booth married a mathematician and computer engineer named Kathleen Britten in 1950. They had two children named Amanda and Ian. Together, from 1947 to 1953, they created three computing machines.
