Asilomar Conference on Beneficial AI

The Asilomar Conference on Beneficial AI was a special meeting organized by the Future of Life Institute. It happened from January 5 to 8, 2017, at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in California. Over 100 important thinkers and experts from fields like economics, law, ethics, and philosophy came together.

The main goal of the conference was to talk about how to make sure that artificial intelligence, or AI, helps people and does not cause harm. The conference created a set of guidelines called the 23 Asilomar AI Principles to help guide future AI research.

Many well-known people signed these principles. Some of them were Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Anthony D. Romero, the executive director of the ACLU, and Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google Deepmind. Other signatories included AI researchers like Ilya Sutskever, Yann LeCun, Yoshua Bengio, and Stuart Russell, as well as philosophers and actors. In total, the principles were signed by 1,797 AI and robotics researchers and 3,923 other people.
