Portrait of Bartholomew Columbus, an explorer and brother of Christopher Columbus, depicted in historical art.

Bartholomew Columbus was a Genoese explorer who lived from around 1461 until August 12, 1514. He was the younger brother of the famous explorer Christopher Columbus. Like his brother, Bartholomew also took part in sea voyages and helped shape the early days of European exploration. His work supported the efforts to connect Europe with new lands across the oceans.

Biography

Bartholomew Columbus was born in Genoa in 1461. He became a mapmaker in Lisbon, where he helped plan a journey with his brother Christopher to reach the far east by sailing west. In 1489, Bartholomew went to England to ask Henry VII for help with the trip but was not welcomed. He then tried Charles VIII of France, but also had no luck.

When Christopher's plans finally succeeded, Bartholomew travelled to Hispaniola in 1494. He helped govern the area and founded the city of Santo Domingo, now the capital of the Dominican Republic. Bartholomew also joined his brother on his last voyage and explored many new lands. He passed away on 12 August 1514.

Legacy

The island of Saint Barthélemy in the Caribbean was named to honor Bartholomew Columbus. His brother, Christopher Columbus, gave the island its name.
