Cat's Eye Nebula

The Cat's Eye Nebula (also known as NGC 6543 and Caldwell 6) was a special kind of glowing cloud in the sky, found in the constellation of Draco. It was first seen by the astronomer William Herschel on February 15, 1786. This nebula was important because it helped scientists learn that these glowing clouds are made of gas, not stars.
The Cat's Eye Nebula has been studied a lot, and pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope show amazing details like glowing knots, jets, and rings coming from the center. At the heart of this nebula is a special kind of aging star called a Wolf–Rayet star. The central star of the Cat's Eye Nebula is not very bright to us on Earth, shining at a magnitude of +11.4. This beautiful nebula has been observed using many different kinds of light, from radio waves to X-ray wavelengths, helping scientists understand more about how these glowing clouds form and change over time.
General information
NGC 6543 is a deep-sky object found in the northern sky. It shines with a magnitude of 8.1 and has a very bright inner area that appears about 16.1 arcseconds wide. Deeper images show a much larger, faint halo around it that stretches about 300 arcseconds or 5 arcminutes across.
This nebula is located very close to an important point in the sky called the north ecliptic pole. This makes it a good marker for studying movements in our solar system. The bright part of the nebula has temperatures between 7,000 and 9,000 K, while the outer halo is even hotter but much less dense. The central star of the nebula is extremely hot, about 80,000 K, and shines 10,000 times brighter than our Sun.
Observations
The Cat's Eye Nebula was the first planetary nebula studied with a spectroscope by William Huggins in 1864. This helped scientists learn that these nebulae are made of thin, glowing gas.
Observations using infrared light show that there is cool dust around the nebula, formed when its parent star was ending its life. This dust glows and helps scientists learn more about the nebula.
The Hubble Space Telescope has taken colorful pictures showing different parts of the nebula, highlighting areas where the gas is less glowing at the edges.
In 2001, the Chandra X-ray Observatory found very hot gas inside the nebula, possibly from the clash of fast winds from the central star with older material. There is also a bright point of X-ray light at the center, which remains a mystery and might mean there is a pair of stars working together.
Distance
We don't know the exact distance to the Cat's Eye Nebula. Scientists used the Hubble Space Telescope to watch how fast it spreads out. From this, they think it might be about 3,300 light-years from Earth, but the distance could be a bit more or less. Other studies suggest it could be around 5,300 light-years away.
Age
We can guess how old the Cat's Eye Nebula is by looking at how fast it is spreading out. If it has been spreading at a steady speed, it might be about 1,000 years old, give or take a bit. This is just a guess because the spreading material might slow down when it hits older material from the star.
Composition
The Cat's Eye Nebula, like most space objects, is made mostly of hydrogen and helium, with small amounts of heavier elements. Scientists study its composition using special tools called spectrographs attached to telescopes.
These tools don't always catch all the light from the nebula, so different studies can find slightly different results. But overall, the nebula has about 0.12 parts helium for every part hydrogen, along with small amounts of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. These amounts are a bit higher than what we find in the Sun, because of processes that happen inside stars.
Kinematics and morphology
The Cat's Eye Nebula has a very complex shape, and scientists are still learning how it formed. The bright center of the nebula has a hot, stretched bubble filled with gas. This bubble is inside two larger, round bubbles joined together at their middle.
The bright part of the nebula is shaped mainly by fast winds from the central hot star. These winds blow at speeds up to 1900 kilometers per second and have carved out the inner bubble.
There are also rings around the bright center, which were likely thrown off before the nebula formed. These rings are evenly spaced and seem to have been created at regular times and speeds. A faint halo surrounds everything, which is even older than the main nebula.
