Cato the Elder
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Marcus Porcius Cato, also known as Cato the Censor, the Elder, and the Wise, was a famous Roman soldier, senator, and historian. He lived from 234 to 149 BC and was known for his strong beliefs in old Roman ways and his opposition to the influence of Greek culture.
Cato came from a family known for their service in the army. When he wasn't fighting, he worked in agriculture, just like his ancestors. He held many important positions in Rome, including military tribune, quaestor, aedile, praetor, consul, and censor. In each role, he worked hard to protect Rome's traditions.
Cato was the first person to write history in Latin. His book, Origines, told the story of Rome, though only pieces of it remain today. He also wrote De agri cultura, a book about farming, rituals, and recipes, which is the oldest known piece of writing in Latin prose.
His title "the Elder" helps distinguish him from his great-grandson, Cato the Younger, who was a senator and opponent of Julius Caesar.
Biography
Cato the Elder was born in a town called Tusculum, where his ancestors also lived. His family was known for being brave soldiers, but they had not held important positions in Rome. Cato wanted to change that and worked hard to earn respect.
Cato grew up near a farm in Sabine land. He learned about farming and business there. As a young man, he joined the army and fought in many battles, including the Second Punic War against Hannibal. He became known for his strong speeches, often ending them with the phrase "Carthage must be destroyed."
Cato was elected to many important positions in Rome. As a consul, he helped create laws to protect Roman citizens. He also served in Spain, where he led successful military campaigns. Later, he focused on improving Rome itself, repairing aqueducts and building public spaces like the Basilica Porcia.
Throughout his life, Cato was a strong supporter of traditional Roman values. He opposed luxury and foreign influences, especially from Greece. In his later years, he pushed for another war against Carthage, believing it was a threat to Rome. He is remembered for his strict discipline and dedication to Rome's old ways.
Writings
Cato was a famous writer in ancient Rome. He was the first important writer to write in Latin, which helped Latin become Rome's main language for literature.
One of his most famous books is De agri cultura, or "On Agriculture." This book gives advice on farming and managing a farm, including details about growing crops and caring for animals. It was very popular and used by many Romans, especially when they were starting to grow more food on larger farms.
Cato also wrote Origines, a history of Rome and other Italian towns. This book told the stories of Rome's beginnings and highlighted Roman values. Though only pieces of this book remain, it was used by other famous writers like Virgil and Cicero.

Cato was portrayed by Vittorio Gassman in the 1971 Italian film Scipione detto anche l'Africano, which starred Marcello Mastroianni as Scipio Africanus.
