Conception Bay South is a town in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The town is commonly called CBS. It is located on the Avalon Peninsula which forms part of the southern shore of Conception Bay on the island of Newfoundland. The town is approximately 20 kilometres (12 miles) southwest of the provincial capital of St. John's.

Conception Bay South is the second largest municipality in the province and is part of the St. John's metropolitan area, the 20th largest metropolitan area in Canada. Most of the residents work in the nearby cities of St. John's or Mount Pearl.

The town lies on Cambrian bedrock, primarily made of shale that contains limestone concretions and manganese ores.

History

Conception Bay South was created in 1973 when eight small communities along the coast joined together. These communities were Topsail, Chamberlains, Manuels, Long Pond, Foxtrap, Kelligrews, Upper Gullies, and Seal Cove. Later, in 1985, Lawrence Pond also joined the town.

The first people to live there were mostly from England, with some from Ireland. They chose this place because the land was good for growing food, there was plenty of wood for fuel, and the weather was milder than in other parts of the area. Roads connected the town to St. John's in the 1830s, and a railway made travel even easier in the 1880s. The people of Conception Bay South grew food and raised cattle to sell in St. John's, and many people from St. John's built summer homes in the area.
