Condé Nast is an American mass media company founded in 1909 by Condé Montrose Nast and owned by Advance Publications. Its headquarters are located at One World Trade Center in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City.
The company has many well-known magazines and websites that reach millions of people around the world. Some of its popular brands include Vogue, The New Yorker, Condé Nast Traveler, Condé Nast Traveller, GQ, Glamour, Architectural Digest, _Vanity Fair, Pitchfork, Wired, Bon Appétit, and Ars Technica. Former U.S. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour works there as Artistic Director and Global Chief Content Officer.
In 2011, Condé Nast started a new part of the company called Condé Nast Entertainment. This group creates movies, TV shows, videos for social media, and virtual reality experiences.
History
The company started in 1909 when Condé Montrose Nast bought Vogue, a magazine about fashion and society. He created Condé Nast Publications to manage his magazines, which grew to include titles like House & Garden, Vanity Fair, Glamour, and American Golfer.
Over the years, Condé Nast became known for creating special interest magazines, focusing on travel, food, home, and culture, with fashion being a big part. The company introduced color photos in magazines during the Great Depression and continued to grow. In 1959, Samuel I. Newhouse bought Condé Nast and merged it with Advance Publications.
In the 2000s, Condé Nast moved to new offices and bought many popular websites and magazines. They also started offering digital subscriptions for tablets like the iPad. Despite successes, the company faced challenges like dropping ad revenues and changes in how people consume media, leading to some layoffs and changes in leadership. In recent years, Condé Nast has made efforts to adapt to new technologies and audience preferences.
