Constanța metropolitan area

The Constanța metropolitan area is a large group of towns and villages that work together, centered around the city of Constanța. It was officially created in 2007 and includes the city of Constanța and several nearby towns such as Năvodari, Ovidiu, Eforie, Murfatlar, and Techirghiol, along with eight smaller communities. According to the latest count in 2021, about 415,695 people live in this area, which makes up 16% of Constanța County.

According to Eurostat, if we look at the area in a wider way, it had around 420,241 people living there in 2015, making it the third biggest urban area in Romania. Before 1989, the city of Constanța had even more nearby places under its control, including the town of Mangalia and a few other small villages and beach towns.

Even though this idea of a united area was created official papers, it has not been fully put into action. There is still no single local government or shared public transport system to connect all these places together.
