Constellation Energy

Constellation Energy Corporation is an American energy company based in Baltimore, Maryland. It provides electric power, natural gas, and energy management services to about two million customers across the United States.

Before 2012, the company was known as Constellation Energy Group and was one of the largest electricity producers in the country. In 2012, it merged with another company called Exelon. After this merger, the part of Constellation Energy that sells energy was called Constellation and became part of Exelon.

In 2022, Constellation Energy became its own company again after splitting off from Exelon. Before the merger, it operated over 35 power plants in 11 states, including Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and California. The company was created as a holding company by Baltimore Gas and Electric in 1999.

History

In 2005, Constellation Energy announced a joint venture to market a new reactor in the United States. Later that year, another company tried to buy Constellation Energy, but the deal was canceled. In 2008, the company's stock price dropped a lot after news about a big financial company, and Constellation considered selling itself but decided not to.

Over the years, Constellation Energy bought many different energy companies and projects. In 2010, it finished building a wind power project in Maryland and bought two natural gas facilities in Texas. In 2011, it was bought by Exelon, another big energy company. In 2018, Constellation started building solar power projects, including one for a school district in Arizona.

In 2022, Constellation became its own company again. In 2024, it agreed to restart a nuclear reactor in Pennsylvania with help from the government. In early 2026, Constellation bought Calpine, a company that provides natural gas and geothermal power, and made a deal to supply electricity to large data centers.

Operations

Constellation Energy helps provide electricity and natural gas to many customers in the United States. It works with big businesses and industries to supply power. The company also has solar power projects in several states, such as Maryland, California, and Texas.

Constellation is a big player in nuclear power, running many nuclear power plants across the country. It also owns other types of power plants, including ones that use natural gas, oil, and hydroelectric power. The company has wind power projects in ten different states too. It also has special teams that help maintain and test nuclear power plants and other important energy systems.

Baltimore community involvement

Constellation Energy has many historical records from old Baltimore energy companies. These records include about 250,000 photos and negatives, kept at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.

The company is also very supportive of the Baltimore community. It ranks second among local companies for giving back and gave $7.10 million in 2017. Constellation also gives money to schools that teach science and technology programs.
