The culture of Latvia is a beautiful mix of old Latvian traditions and the heritage of the Livonian people, shaped by the country's rich history. Latvia has many different areas, each with its own special ways of life. These areas include Vidzeme, Latgale, Courland, Zemgale, and Sēlija.

The traditions, stories, music, and customs of these regions have helped create a unique culture that people still enjoy today. Even though Latvia has been influenced by many other countries over time, its own special character remains strong. This mix of old and new makes Latvian culture interesting and important to learn about.

Historical regions of Latvia, together with Latvian cultural groups

People have lived in the area of Latvia since 9000 BC. The ancestors of today’s Latvians, known as Baltic tribes, arrived around 3000 BC. In the 13th century, Baltic Germans came and became the leaders, while Latvians and Livonians became serfs. During this time, many people were taught the German way of life, but some local traditions stayed alive.

In the 19th century, serfdom ended, and Latvians began a movement to celebrate their own culture, language, and history. This was called the First Latvian National Awakening. Later, there was a time when Russian influence grew strong, but Latvian culture continued to grow. This led to independence in 1918. In 1934, a leader named Kārlis Ulmanis took control, but World War II soon began, and Latvia was occupied by Germany and then the USSR. Latvia regained its independence in 1991.

Demography

Most people in Latvia are Latvians. There is a special group called the Latgalians who live in the Latgale region in the east. Another group is the Livonians, who speak a language that is almost no longer used.

The biggest group of people from other places are Slavic people, especially Russians. Other groups include Romani people, Baltic Germans, and Jews. Their numbers went down a lot after the Second World War. There are also some Lithuanians and Estonians living there.

One famous part of Latvian clothing for women is the traditional belt, called a sash. It has special woven patterns, and each area of Latvia has its own designs and colors. The most well-known sash is from Lielvārde, a red and white woven belt with a complex pattern. Long ago, before clothes had pockets, this sash helped hold items together. Today, people mainly wear these traditional clothes during special events like the Song and Dance Festivals in Riga and on Midsummer Night, celebrated on June 23.
