FL1 (Lazio regional railways)

The FL1 is a regional rail route that is part of the Lazio regional railways network in Italy. It is operated by Trenitalia and serves the city of Rome and its surrounding areas. Before 2012, it was known as the FR1.

This train route uses tracks from three important railways: the Florence–Rome railway, the Pisa–Livorno–Rome railway, and the Rome–Fiumicino railway. In the city of Rome, it helps people travel quickly between different parts of the city, acting like a commuter railway.

Each day, about 65,000 passengers ride an FL1 train. At the stations, electronic boards show the trains as "R" for Regional train, making it easy for everyone to find their way.

Route

The FL1 is a train route that goes across Rome. It starts at Orte and heads south along the Florence–Rome railway to Roma Tiburtina. From there, it continues around the east and south side of Rome to Roma Trastevere. Finally, it reaches Fiumicino Aeroporto to the southwest of Rome.

History

The first FL1 train services started in 1994, running between Monterotondo-Mentana and Fiumicino Aeroporto. This helped bring more trains through Rome.

In the early years, the route split near Fiumicino, with some trains going to Fiumicino Città and others to the airport. Later, Fiumicino Città station closed. In 2006, a new station called Fiera di Roma opened and became part of the FL1 route.

Scheduling

The FL1 route is listed in Trenitalia's timetables as M70 Orte–Fara Sabina–Fiumicino FR1.

Since 2012, FL1 trains have run between Fara Sabina and Fiumicino every 15 minutes. Some trains start or end in Fara Sabina or Poggio Mirteto, so they run between Fara Sabina and Poggio Mirteto every 30 minutes, and connect Poggio Mirteto and Orte every 60 minutes.
