Fig wasp

Fig wasps are tiny insects that belong to a group called wasps. They spend their early life inside special fruits of fig trees called syconia. Some fig wasps help the fig trees by pollinating them, which means they help the trees make fruits. These helpful wasps are called pollinators and belong to a family known as Agaonidae.

Other fig wasps do not help the trees and instead live off the tree for food. These wasps are called non-pollinators. They can create their own homes inside the fig or move into homes made by other wasps.

All these wasps depend on fig trees to grow and reproduce. The pollinators work together with the trees, helping them while also benefiting from them. The non-pollinators, however, take from the trees without giving anything back, living in a more competitive way.

History

The ancient Greek thinker Aristotle wrote about how wild fig fruits contain tiny wasps called psenes. These wasps start as grubs inside the fig and then become adults that fly out to help other figs grow. Aristotle thought these wasps just appeared on their own, but we now know they help figs reproduce.

Taxonomy

Fig wasps are a group of insects that look similar because they all live with fig trees. In 2022, scientists updated their classification so that only the wasps that help fig trees produce fruit are in the family Agaonidae. Other types of fig wasps are now placed in different families, including Epichrysomallidae, Eurytomidae, Melanosomellidae, Ormyridae, Pteromalidae, and Torymidae. These wasps do not help the fig trees and are quite different from the ones that do.

In the Agaonidae family, female wasps have four wings, but males do not have any wings. Male wasps mate with females inside the fig and then chew a hole for the females to escape.

Non-pollinating fig wasps have special body parts that help them lay eggs inside figs. Some have very long tools to lay eggs from outside the fig, while others enter the fig like the pollinating wasps.

Most figs have three types of flowers: male, short female, and long female. Female wasps can reach the short female flowers to lay eggs, but not the long female flowers. The short female flowers grow new wasps, while the long female flowers grow seeds. Ripe figs are not full of dead wasps—the crunchy bits are seeds. Figs make a special enzyme that breaks down dead wasps, helping the fruit ripen. Some fig varieties can produce fruit without needing wasps to pollinate them.

The life cycle of the fig wasp is closely connected to the fig tree it lives in. There are two types of wasps: those that help the tree and those that do not. The helpful wasps are part of a special partnership with the fig tree, while the others simply take from the plant.

A typical life cycle for a helpful fig wasp starts when a female wasp enters the fig's "fruit," which is actually a special stem-like structure called a syconium. She lays her eggs inside and also leaves pollen from another fig, which helps the tree's flowers grow. After she finishes, she dies. Other wasps may also lay eggs in the fig before it hardens. These wasps can harm either the fig or the helpful wasps.

As the fig grows, the wasp eggs hatch into larvae. The male wasps mate with the females before they emerge, and then dig tunnels out of the fig for the females to escape. The males usually die after this. The females leave, collect pollen, and fly to another fig tree to start the cycle again.

Coevolution

The relationship between figs and fig wasps began between 70 and 90 million years ago from a special event in nature. Over time, figs and wasps have changed together, creating new species. This close relationship means that figs and wasps often develop in pairs, showing how they depend on each other.

Groups of fig wasps change along with groups of figs, helping both to keep evolving. This mixing helps create many different kinds of figs and fig wasps, such as Pegoscapus.

Conservation

Conservation efforts work to manage groups of figs and fig wasps separately, creating unique plans for each. Protecting these tiny wasps is important because many act as pollinators, and their numbers are shrinking due to climate change. Since figs and fig wasps have lived together for many generations, helping one helps the other.

Figs are vital to many ecosystems, providing food and homes for many animals. Fig wasps depend on figs to survive, and without them, fig trees would struggle. This is why protecting fig wasps has become a key goal for conservationists, ensuring that important fig trees also stay safe.

One of the biggest groups of fig wasps is kept in Leeds Museums and Galleries at their Discovery Centre. These wasps were gathered by a scientist named Dr. Steve Compton.
