Flag of Tajikistan

The national flag of Tajikistan was adopted in November 1992, replacing the flag of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic that was used from 1953. It is an unequal horizontal tricolor made of red, white, and green. In the middle of the flag, there is a yellow crown with an arc of seven stars. The flag has a width ratio of 2:3:2.

The colors on the flag are carried over from the earlier Tajik Soviet flag, and the flag keeps the same 1:2 proportions. Each year on November 24, Tajikistan celebrates flag day to mark the day the flag was officially adopted.

Design and symbolism

The flag of Tajikistan is a tricolor made of red, white, and green. The red stands for unity, victory, and the sunrise. It also reminds us of the past under Russia and the Soviet eras, as well as the brave people who sacrificed their lives to protect the land. The white color means purity, the snow and ice of the mountains, and cotton. The green shows the beauty of nature, fertile valleys, the religion of Islam, and the celebration of Novruz.

The red and green stripes are the same size, while the white stripe in the middle is a bit wider. In the center of the white stripe, there is a yellow crown with seven stars. The crown represents the Samanid dynasty and the Tajik people. The seven stars are important in Persian mythology, standing for perfection and happiness. They remind us of the belief in seven mountains and seven gardens in the heavens, each with a shining star above it.

Presidential standard

The special flag for the president of Tajikistan was introduced in 2006 for the start of Emomali Rahmon’s third term. This flag uses the country’s red, white, and green colors with an image of the Derafsh Kāviān, an old royal symbol from the Sassanid times. Inside this symbol is a winged lion, and there are also images of the country’s crown and seven stars.

In the middle of the flag are designs that were once used in the Emblem of Tajikistan. There is also a star in each corner to stand for the four regions of Tajikistan.

Historical flags

From 1953 to 1992, Tajikistan used a flag from its time as part of the Soviet Union. This flag looked like the Soviet flag but had extra white and green stripes. The red color stood for big changes, white stood for cotton, and green stood for farming.

The flag had two sides. The back side was a mirror of the front but without some special symbols. This flag was used until Tajikistan created its new flag in 1992, making it the last Soviet country to get a new one.
