Frascati began as a small village in the 9th century. After nearby Tusculum was destroyed in 1191, many people moved to Frascati, and it grew larger. Over the centuries, it was owned by different families and leaders. In 1460, walls were built around the city to protect it.

In the 1500s, Frascati became a place where important people lived. In 1616, the first public and free school in Europe opened there. During World War II, Frascati was heavily bombed, and many buildings were destroyed. The city was freed from occupation on June 4, 1944.
