Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli was an Italian astronomer and science historian who lived from 1835 to 1910. He made important discoveries and helped us understand more about space and the planets.

One of Schiaparelli's biggest contributions was creating the system we still use today to name features on Mars. Before his time, the marks and spots on Mars had unusual names, much like the old moon maps made by van Langren before Hevelius. Schiaparelli changed this by giving Mars its own set of names, which astronomers still use to talk about the red planet.

His work helped scientists and space lovers around the world share clear information about Mars, making it easier for everyone to study and learn from this fascinating planet.

Biography

Giovanni Schiaparelli was born on 14 March 1835 in Savigliano, Piedmont. He graduated from the University of Turin in 1854 and later studied in Berlin under the director of the Berlin Observatory, Johann Franz Encke. He also worked at the Pulkovo Observatory near Saint Petersburg.

Schiaparelli became well-known for his studies of Mars. He created detailed maps of the planet and accurately located many of its features. In 1862, he became the director of the Brera Observatory in Milan, where he worked for over forty years. He received many honors, including two Lalande Prizes from the French Academy of Sciences and the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. He retired in 1900 and passed away in Milan on 4 July 1910.

Giovanni Schiaparelli made important discoveries by looking at the planet Mars through a telescope. He gave names to what he thought were "seas" and "continents" on Mars. In 1877, when Mars was very close to Earth, he saw many straight lines on the planet's surface. He called these lines canali in Italian, which means "channels". However, this was mistranslated into English as "canals", making people think they were man-made.

Because of this mistake, many people began to imagine that there might be intelligent life on Mars. An American astronomer named Percival Lowell strongly believed in these "canals" and spent much of his life studying them. Even after Lowell passed away, the idea of canals built by Martians stayed popular for many years and inspired many science fiction stories.

Later, other scientists realized that these lines were just tricks of the eye. Spacecraft visiting Mars in the 1960s took much clearer pictures and showed that there were no canals at all.

Schiaparelli suggested that instead of real channels, these lines might be long, shallow depressions in the ground that could carry water across the dry planet.

In 1877, Giovanni Schiaparelli created a new way to name features on Mars. He used names from ancient stories and places. Dark areas were called after old seas and rivers, while lighter areas were named after islands and famous lands. This system replaced the older one made by Richard A. Proctor. Later observers, like E. M. Antoniadi, also used Schiaparelli's names. In 1958, a group of experts made a list of official names for Mars, and most of them were the ones Schiaparelli had chosen.

Astronomy and history of science

Giovanni Schiaparelli was an astronomer who studied objects in the Solar System. He worked with binary stars and discovered a large asteroid called 69 Hesperia on April 29, 1861. Schiaparelli showed that meteor showers are linked to comets. For example, he proved that the Leonid meteor shower follows the path of the comet Tempel-Tuttle. He also observed the planets Mercury and Venus and measured how long they take to spin.

Schiaparelli also studied the history of astronomy. He discovered that ancient astronomers like Eudoxus of Cnidus and Callippus used concentric spheres not as real objects, but as part of a calculation method similar to what we call Fourier series today.

Honours and awards

Giovanni Schiaparelli received many awards for his work. He was given the Lalande Prize in 1868, the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1872, and the Bruce Medal in 1902.

Several places and objects were named after him. These include an asteroid called 4062 Schiaparelli, a crater on the Moon, a crater on Mars, a feature on Mercury called Schiaparelli Dorsum, and a lander called Schiaparelli that was part of the 2016 ExoMars mission.

Relatives

Giovanni Schiaparelli had a niece named Elsa Schiaparelli, who became a famous designer of special clothes called haute couture. He also had a brother named Celestino, who was a well-known scholar of Italian Arabic studies and taught at the University of Rome.

Selected writings

Giovanni Schiaparelli wrote many important books about astronomy. Some of his well-known works include The Falling Stars in 1873, Life on Mars in 1893, and Writings on the History of Classical Astronomy in three volumes, published in 1925 and later reprinted in 1997. He also wrote several other books in Italian about stars and observations made through telescopes.
