Glaucophytes, also called glaucocystophytes or glaucocystids, are a small group of single-celled algae. You can find them in freshwater and moist places on land, though they are less common today than they used to be. Scientists think there are between 14 and 26 different kinds of glaucophytes.

These tiny organisms are important for scientists who study how chloroplasts work. Chloroplasts are parts inside plant cells that help them make food from sunlight. Glaucophytes might look similar to the very first algae that eventually led to red algae and green plants, including land plants.

One special thing about glaucophytes is that they only reproduce by splitting into two parts, without any involvement from other cells. This makes them different from red and green algae, which have more ways to create new cells.

Reproduction

Glaucophytes reproduce only by dividing into two parts, without any mixing of genetic material from two parents. They split into two cells directly, and some can also create tiny, swimming cells called zoospores. One type, Cyanophora paradoxa, splits lengthwise to make two new cells. Another type, Glaucocystis, makes new cells that stay still and do not swim. Scientists have not found any way that these tiny plants reproduce by combining with each other.

Characteristics

The plastids of glaucophytes are special structures called muroplasts, cyanoplasts, or cyanelles. They have a unique layer made of peptidoglycan, which scientists think is a leftover piece of history from when these plastids came from cyanobacteria through a process called endosymbiosis. This layer helps in the division of plastids and shows their connection to cyanobacteria.

Glaucophytes use chlorophyll a for photosynthesis, like red algae and cyanobacteria, and they also use structures called phycobilisomes to capture light. These structures contain pigments that help them gather light in dim underwater places. Unlike green algae and plants, glaucophytes store carbon in a part of their cell called the cytosol, which is thought to be an ancient trait they have kept.

The genus Cyanophora is one of the earliest types of glaucophytes and usually has just one or two plastids. When there are two, they are partly connected. Glaucophytes also have mitochondria with flat cristae and divide their cells in a way that does not need centrioles. Some glaucophytes can move and have two unequal flagella with fine hairs, anchored by a system of microtubules.

Phylogeny

Together with red algae and Viridiplantae (green algae and land plants), glaucophytes form the Archaeplastida. This group includes organisms that may share a common ancestor that formed a partnership with a cyanobacterium.

The exact family tree of glaucophytes is still being studied, and the number of species can vary depending on the source. Some studies suggest there are between 14 and 26 different species of glaucophytes. They are not very common in nature today.
