Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

Google AI is a part of Google DeepMind that focuses on artificial intelligence. It was introduced at Google I/O in 2017 by CEO Sundar Pichai. This group works on many important AI projects around the world, with research centers in places like Zurich, Paris, Israel, and Beijing.

In 2023, Google made some big changes in how it organizes its AI work. The leader of Google AI, Jeff Dean, became the chief scientist at Google. This change also brought together Google Brain and Google DeepMind, which Google had bought in 2014.

Google also tried to create a group of experts to help guide its AI technology, but faced some challenges and changed its plans. By February 2025, Alphabet updated its rules about how AI should be used, removing some earlier limits on technologies that might cause harm.

Merger with DeepMind

In 2023, Google’s AI team, called Google Brain, joined together with DeepMind. This created a new group named Google DeepMind. The change was made to help Google work faster on building new smart technologies.

Projects

Google AI works on many exciting projects to help people and businesses. One project is Google Vids, which uses AI to help create videos for work. There is also Google Assistant, a helpful virtual friend created by Google AI since 2023. Google AI also helps researchers by providing special computers called tensor processing units to develop smart software.

Another important project is TensorFlow, a tool made in 2015 to help build smart programs. There is also a team called Magenta that explores how to use smart technology to help artists and musicians create great work. They share free tools for anyone to use. Google AI has also created Sycamore, a special computer with 54 tiny parts called qubits that can solve complex problems. Additionally, Google AI works on creating collections of information in languages that are not commonly used, to help AI understand and speak these languages better.
