Greater Toluca

Greater Toluca, also called the Metropolitan Area of Toluca, is a big group of cities and towns that includes the city of Toluca and 15 nearby areas in the state of Mexico. Toluca itself is just one of several towns in its own municipality, which had about 910,608 people in 2020. But when you count all the towns and cities in the whole area, there were about 2.3 million people. This makes Greater Toluca the fifth largest metropolitan area in Mexico, after Greater Mexico City, Greater Guadalajara, Greater Monterrey, and Greater Puebla.

The Toluca Valley Metropolitan Area is in the State of Mexico and includes 16 municipalities. It is the second largest metropolitan area in the state. Important cities in this area include Toluca de Lerdo, Metepec, Zinacantepec, Lerma de Villada, and Tenango del Valle. This area is also the closest metropolitan area to the Valley of Mexico, being about 66 kilometers away. The economy of the area has grown a lot, especially around Zinacantepec, Tenango del Valle, and Lerma. According to the 2020 Population and Housing Census by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, the metropolitan area of the Toluca Valley is the fifth largest city in Mexico.

Municipalities that make up the Metropolitan Zone

The big city area around Toluca includes several smaller areas called municipalities. These are Almoloya de Juárez, Calimaya, Chapultepec, Lerma, Metepec, Mexicaltzingo, Ocoyoacac, Otzolotepec, Rayón, San Antonio la Isla, San Mateo Atenco, Temoaya, Tenango del Valle, Xonacatlán and Zinacantepec. Together, they form the larger area known as Greater Toluca.

Education

The Greater Toluca area has many places for students to learn. Some important schools include the Metropolitan Autonomous University Unidad Lerma (UAM-L), the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMéx), and the Institute of Technology and Studies Superiers of Monterrey (ITESM). There are also schools like the Technological Institute of Toluca (TecNM Campus Toluca), Universidad Tecnológica de México (UNITEC), Universidad del Valle de México (UVM), and the Technological University of the Toluca Valley (UTVT), along with many others.
