Gustavo Bacarisas

Gustavo Bacarisa (1872–1971) was a painter from Gibraltar. He was born in Gibraltar and later passed away in Seville, Spain. Bacarisa’s paintings were known for their bright colors and realistic style, showing many different subjects.

He was married to Elsa Jernås, an artist and designer from Sweden. Together, they contributed to the world of art, with Bacarisa’s work remaining important for its beautiful use of color and its reflection of Gibraltar’s culture.

Career

Gustavo Bacarisas studied painting in Paris, France, and then worked in Buenos Aires, Argentina, until 1916. He later moved to Seville, the capital of Andalusian, and also traveled to Sweden to help create sets and figures for the opera Carmen. He did similar work for the first show of El amor brujo (which means "Love, the Magician") at the Teatro Español in Madrid. During the Spanish Civil War, he went to live on the Portuguese island of Madeira and came back to Gibraltar in 1937. After the Second World War, he moved to Spain and settled in Seville.

Bacarisas showed his paintings in many cities in Spain and other countries too. He received a gold medal and the title of honorary professor from the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría, and he became a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
