Hawaii statistical areas

The U.S. State of Hawaiʻi has special areas used for counting and studying its people. These are called statistical areas and are set by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). On July 21, 2023, the OMB made two bigger areas called metropolitan statistical areas and two smaller ones called micropolitan statistical areas in Hawaiʻi.

As of 2023, the biggest of these areas is the Urban Honolulu, HI MSA. This area is centered around Honolulu, which is Hawaiʻi’s capital and largest city. Honolulu is located on the island of Oahu. These statistical areas help leaders make good plans for the islands by showing where people live and work.

Statistical areas

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has set up special areas to help understand where people live in the United States and Puerto Rico. These areas show where groups of people are close together and help governments plan things.

The OMB calls these areas core-based statistical areas (CBSA). They include a main place with at least 10,000 people and the areas around it that are closely connected. If the area has 50,000 people or more, it is called a metropolitan statistical area (MSA). If it has between 10,000 and 49,999 people, it is called a micropolitan statistical area (μSAs).
