Description
The High Tatras are a beautiful mountain range along the border of northern Slovakia and southern Poland. They are part of the larger Tatra Mountains. Most of the range, including the highest peaks, lies in Slovakia. The tallest peak is Gerlachovský štít, standing at 2,655 metres (8,711 feet).
The High Tatras have many peaks over 2,500 metres and are special because they have alpine landscapes and habitats, which are rare in the Carpathian Mountains. The first cross-border national park in Europe was created here. Tatra National Park was founded in Slovakia in 1948 and in Poland in 1954. These parks together protect a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
The High Tatras are home to many rare animals and plants. You can find species like the Tatra chamois, along with predators such as the Eurasian brown bear, lynx, marten, wolf, and fox. Alpine marmots are also common. The plants include special species like the Tatra scurvy-grass, yellow mountain saxifrage, net-leaved willow, Norway spruce, Swiss pine, and European larch.
