Huangshan City

Huangshan is a city in southern Anhui Province in China. Its name means "Yellow Mountain" because of the beautiful Yellow Mountains that cover much of the area. The city includes three urban districts and four counties, with the main urban center called Tunxi District. As of 2021, Huangshan had a population of about 1.3 million people.

Huangshan is located in the southernmost part of Anhui. It shares borders with Chizhou, Xuancheng, Jiangxi Province, and Zhejiang Province. The area has a long history, dating back to ancient times. Huangshan is well-known for its cultural and natural treasures, including two important places recognized by UNESCO: Mount Huangshan and the historic villages of Hongcun and Xidi. Because of these attractions, Huangshan is a popular destination for visitors from all over the world.

Administration

The city of Huangshan is made up of several smaller areas. It has 3 districts and 4 counties. These areas are part of what is called a prefecture-level city.

• Qimen County

Geography and climate

Huangshan City has a humid subtropical climate, which means it has short, cool winters and long, very hot and humid summers. In the central Tunxi District, temperatures can range from about 4°C (39°F) in January to 28°C (83°F) in July, with an average temperature of around 17°C (62°F) throughout the year. The city receives a lot of rain, especially in spring and early summer, with about 1,739 mm (69 inches) of rain each year. This is much more rain than areas further north in the province.

Economy

Huangshan is well-known for its tea, especially Keemun tea from Qimen County and Maofeng green tea. The city attracts many visitors because of its beautiful scenery, such as Mount Huang, along with other lovely spots like Xidi and Hongcun. These attractions have been shared with people all over the world recently.

Transportation

Huangshan has tough terrain with narrow roads, but recent improvements have made travel easier. The Huangshan Tunxi International Airport, opened in 1959, offers flights within China and to cities like Seoul, Hong Kong, and Taipei.

Trains now run from Huangshan North station to many cities using high-speed rail lines. In the past, trains traveled on a different route, but now that line no longer has long-distance passenger services.

Major highways, such as the G56 Hangzhou–Ruili Expressway and the G3 Beijing–Taipei Expressway, pass through the area, connecting it to other cities.

Cultural history

During the Ming dynasty, a person named Zheng Zhizhen from Qimen County wrote an opera called Mulian Rescues His Mother. Local stories say that Zheng was blind when he wrote the opera, but a kind spirit named Guanyin helped him see again. Later in 2011, local leaders encouraged people to perform this old play to attract visitors.

Huangshan City has been home to some interesting people.

Zhang Rongqiao, born in 1966, is a physicist and aerospace engineer. He served as the chief designer of the Tianwen-1 Mars mission.

Gloria Ai, born in 1987, is a business anchorwoman and author.

International relations

Huangshan City has a special friendship with a place called Serravalle in San Marino, which started in 1999. This means the two places work together and share good ideas.

Other notes

In early 2008, the BBC showed a series of five documentaries about school life in China, called "Chinese School". One of the schools they showed was Xiuning High School, the top school in the area. This school is located in the town of Xiuning, in the county of Xiuning in Huangshan.
