KKs 3

A beautiful dwarf galaxy floating in space, part of our Local Group of galaxies.

KKs 3 is a special kind of very small galaxy called a dwarf galaxy. It is found in a group of galaxies close to our own, called the Local Group. What makes KKs 3 unusual is that it has very little gas and is very far away from other galaxies, sitting alone in the space around the Local Group.

KKs 3 is about 7 million light years away from Earth. Scientists think it has a mass of about 23 million times the mass of our Sun. Most of its stars are very old, more than 12 billion years, which means this galaxy has been around for a very long time.

This galaxy was discovered in December 2014. The discovery happened thanks to an image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope back in August of that year.
