List of Unicode characters

Unicode is a system that helps computers understand and show many different kinds of writing and symbols from around the world. It includes letters, numbers, and special signs used in many languages. As of Unicode version 17.0, there are 297,334 assigned characters with code points, covering 172 modern and historical scripts, as well as multiple symbol sets.

Because it is not possible to list all of these characters on one page, this article focuses on a subset of the most important characters for English-language readers. It lists the 1,062 characters in the Multilingual European Character Set 2 (MES-2) subset, along with some additional related characters. These characters include many that are not found in the basic ASCII set, which is a smaller group of characters commonly used in older computers.

Character reference overview

HTML and XML have special ways to show Unicode characters when we can't or shouldn't use the characters directly. One way is called a numeric character reference, which points to a character using its Unicode number code.

Another way is called a character entity reference, which uses a special name to stand for a character. Both methods help us write characters that might be hard to type or could cause problems in our documents.

Control codes

There are 65 special characters used for controlling devices and computers. These include the DEL character and all belong to the common script.

Latin script

The Unicode Standard (version 17.0) includes 1,492 characters that are part of the Latin script.

Basic Latin

This group has 95 characters. Out of these, 52 are alphabet letters from the Latin script, and 43 are from the common script. The 33 characters known as ASCII Punctuation & Symbols are sometimes called ASCII special characters. When a group talks about needing "punctuation marks" in a password, they often mean just these characters.

Latin-1 Supplement

This group includes 96 characters. Of these, 62 are letters and two are ordinal indicators from the Latin script. The other 32 characters belong to the common script.

Latin Extended-A

There are 128 characters here, and all of them are part of the Latin script.

Latin Extended-B

This group has 208 characters, all from the Latin script. Out of these, 33 are part of the MES-2 subset.
