Canidae is a family of mammals that includes domestic dogs, wolves, coyotes, foxes, jackals, dingoes, and many other dog-like animals that are still alive today or have gone extinct. These animals are found all around the world, except for Antarctica, and they come in many different sizes—from the large wolf to the tiny fennec fox. They usually have long muzzles, upright ears, and teeth that are good for cracking bones and slicing meat.

Most canids live together in family groups or small packs, and they work together to take care of their young. Only the leading pair in a group usually has babies, and they raise their pups in a den underground. Canids talk to each other using smells and sounds.

One special canid is the domestic dog, which has been a friend to humans for at least 14,000 years. Today, dogs are one of the most common pets in the world. There are 37 different species of canids alive today, split into two main groups: the wolf-like canids and the fox-like canids. Scientists have also found many extinct canids, with the earliest ones living about 37 million years ago.

Conventions

The author citation for the species or genus is shown after the scientific name. If parentheses surround the citation, it means the original taxonomic placement was different. Conservation status codes are based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. When possible, range maps are provided; if not, a description of where the canid lives is given. These ranges come from the IUCN Red List unless stated otherwise. Any extinct species (or subspecies) listed with living species went extinct after the year 1500 CE and are marked with a dagger symbol: "†".

Classification

The family Canidae includes many types of dog-like animals. There are 37 living species in 13 groups, called genera, and 194 living subspecies. Some species have gone extinct, like the genus Dusicyon.

Canidae distribution

All living canids belong to one subgroup called Caninae. They can be split into three bigger groups, called tribes. These tribes include animals like wolves, coyotes, foxes, and jackals.

The Canidae family includes animals like domestic dogs, wolves, coyotes, foxes, jackals, dingoes, and many others. These animals are found on all continents except Antarctica. They are all part of a single group called Caninae.
