Louis Victor Pierre Raymond, 7th Duc de Broglie, was a French theoretical physicist and aristocrat. He was born on 15 August 1892 and passed away on 19 March 1987. He is best known for his big idea in 1924 about how tiny parts of the world, like electrons, behave like waves as well as particles. This important thought is called the de Broglie hypothesis and helps us understand how very small things work.

In 1929, de Broglie received the Nobel Prize in Physics because scientists later proved his idea was right. His work helped another famous scientist, Erwin Schrödinger, create new ways to describe how these tiny parts move and change. Even today, his ideas are a big part of how we study the world of very small things, called quantum mechanics.

Besides his science work, de Broglie was also involved in many important groups. He joined a special group of writers called the Académie française in 1944 and helped start a big science lab in Europe known as CERN. He wrote books about science and tried to make science easier for everyone to understand.

Louis Victor Pierre Raymond was born on 15 August 1892 in Dieppe, France, into the noble House of Broglie. His family had been important in French history for many years. Though he first studied history, he later turned to physics.

In 1924, Louis shared an important idea in physics: that tiny pieces of matter, like electrons, behave like waves as well as particles. This idea helped create a new area of science called wave mechanics. For this work, he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1929. He spent his life studying and teaching physics, and he also wrote about how science helps us understand the world.

Research

Physics of X-ray and photoelectric effect

Louis de Broglie's early work in the 1920s, done in his brother Maurice's lab, focused on the photoelectric effect and x-rays. He studied how x-rays are absorbed and used theories to explain their behavior. These studies helped scientists understand more about the tiny particles inside atoms.

Matter and wave–particle duality

De Broglie thought about how x-rays behave and realized that particles might also act like waves. He built on ideas from Einstein about light and suggested that all matter has wave-like properties. This important idea became known as the de Broglie hypothesis.

In 1923, de Broglie shared his ideas in a note called "Waves and quanta." He proposed that moving particles have a special kind of wave connected to them. These waves helped explain how particles move and behave. His work laid the foundation for wave mechanics, which was later supported by experiments and developed by other scientists.

Conjecture of an internal clock of the electron

De Broglie also guessed that electrons might have an internal clock that helps guide their movement. Later scientists built on this idea.

Non-nullity and variability of mass

De Broglie believed that particles like neutrinos and photons have very small amounts of mass. He also thought that the mass of particles could change.

Generalization of the principle of least action

In his thesis, de Broglie connected ideas from mechanics and optics, showing how they are related.

Duality of the laws of nature

De Broglie extended the idea that particles can act like waves to all particles. He also tried to connect the laws of thermodynamics and mechanics.

Neutrino theory of light

In 1934, de Broglie proposed that light could be thought of as two tiny particles called Dirac neutrinos joined together. This idea was later challenged and mostly set aside.

Hidden thermodynamics

De Broglie's last idea tried to connect three big principles in physics. He suggested a link between action and entropy, which are two very different concepts.

Publications

Louis de Broglie wrote many important books and reports about physics. Some of his well-known works include Recherches sur la théorie des quanta from 1924, Matière et lumière from 1937, and La Physique nouvelle et les quanta also from 1937. He also wrote about the life of scientist Paul Langevin in 1947 and shared ideas about modern physics in books like Certitudes et incertitudes de la science from 1966. His works helped explain how tiny particles behave in the world of quantum physics.

He worked with others too, such as writing about Albert Einstein in 1966 and discussing ideas with Jean-Pierre Vigier in 1961. His publications cover many areas, from wave mechanics to the uncertainty principles discovered by Heisenberg.
